The Butterfly Bush earns its name by attracting various butterflies. Here a Painted Lady stops by for a visit.

1) And a lovely painted lady she is!
Steve, seems like most of our butterflies this year are missing parts of wings - sometimes almost an entire wing. I'm amazed they can still survive. Do you think our severe drought has affected that?pegiThursday, August 28, 2008
2) My Butterfly Bush finally flowered. It's really pretty. Reminds me of those little novelty confetti poppers you see around New Year's Day.SallyPantsThursday, August 28, 2008
3) Pegi - only a guess on my part, nothing scientifically verified - I think that due to their wings being so fragile they lose parts of them when they flutter around in flowers and bushes. As you know, butterflies do not fly in a straight-line pattern and it is this erratic flight in and among obstacles that they come into contact with that removes parts of their wing.stheinzThursday, August 28, 2008
4) Sounds like a valid argument, Steve. It's a comfort to know you don't get them with the weed whacker. :)
Great photo. Looks like a small fairy.LGrantThursday, August 28, 2008
