The Hound of the Baskervilles (Part II)

The next day we never heard anything from animal control but the couple stopped by while Carrie was at work to give us flowers and a card. They were really nice and we chatted a little. I told her how she was doing and left it at that.

After getting back from work last night I took a picture of the wound. She had left work to go back to prompt care because she thought the antibiotics weren't working. So they gave her a shot and told her to keep her leg up as much as possible for the next day.

Today the wound got a little better even though Carrie had a hard time walking when she got up. I told her it was probably especially stiff from inactivity overnight. Lucy was mercifully good today so Mama and baby chilled out and relaxed all day while I was at work.

After I gave Lucy her bath I suggested Carrie go to visit the neighbours essentially to show them the damage. She did this....only the husband was there but he told her to bring them any medical bills. That's nice; it saves us having to ask.

3) No silly, I mean her leg looks like she has a serious infection, cellulitis.

5) Dog bites are very nasty (bad germs!) and often require IV antibiotics. Keep a close eye on those wounds. I agree with Dannie...the leg doesn't look good. Is it as warm to touch as it looks? If the redness continues to spread seek more medical attention again ASAP.

6) Leslie, would an Epsom Salts bath help? I know it helps me with skin issues and once when I got a nasty puncture wound from a tree (long story). Maybe that would help get some of the swelling down and help clean the wound some?

I agree with Leslie, Carrie, puncture wounds are the hardest to heal since they have to heal from the inside out and dog teeth (and worse cat teeth and nails!) definitely do it messy and germy. Hope that gets better soon--it has to hurt with that look!!

7) Sure, the redness and the bite marks look bad, but I'm really concerned about those dotted-line marks. They just don't look natural; get them checked out!

8) Last night she was talking about her leg and said "feel it, its warm and hard"........I just looked at her until she reassessed what she said.

Cellulitis is exactly what it is......she told me she thought it possible she might have to go into hospital for IV antibiotics but its looking like the shot has stopped the spreading.

The dots were to show how the infection spreads but when it is obvious it is getting better I plan on using them to do a dot-to-dot picture.

9) Gee Scott I am surprised you looked at the pictures and didn't faint.
Linda/Carrie, Epsom Salts might help, but antibiotic ointment (you can get it over the counter) applied to the wounds 2-3 X a day might be your best bet. I am hoping they gave you some at the urgent care. Keep us posted!!

11) I'm not too worried, she's seen a doctor a couple of times and she's a nurse herself. She's also in the middle of her nurse practitioner masters program hence posessing infinitely more knowledge than I.

12) I hope the neighbor is going to keep her dog inside or on a leash.

13) Until further notice the dog is restricted to the house except for bladder/bowel requirements. This is pending the result of a mandatory blood test to check for any weirdness.

16) We just got a letter from the Department of Public Health saying that the dog "was found to be free of clinical signs of rabies."
So that's good news but we're still waiting for the infection to clear up. The wound is deep and has been seeping pus. Carrie has a second course of antibiotics because by the end of the initial course, the infection was spreading back.

17) I was alway under the impression if a dog bit someone like that randomly, they were to be put down. Is that NOT a law? I have neighbors that when their dog lunged out the door and bit the mail man, they put it down immediately. That is very scary esp. since you are neighbors. I am so sorry to hear of her experience. Take good care.

18) I am less concerned knowing she has a medical background but sometimes we nurses are the worst patients and tend to ignore or think things will get better.(on the other hand we can be overly cautious) I hope that they have done a culture-it could be some kind of weird bacteria and you don't want it get in her blood stream (getting septic) or invade the bone.

19) She's the overly cautious type. Although there hasn't been a culture done yet because there hasn't been pus up until now. She has a doctor appointment on Monday but may cancel if it clears up some by then.....she's scheduled to work and doesn't want to trade shifts just for the appointment. I told her she should go anyway.
