Avenue Glass Suck

A couple of months ago, perhaps three, we got new bedroom furniture. Now, due to the rather nice wooden surfaces and kitty claw hazard, the procurement of some form of protection for aforementioned surfaces was deemed prudent. The chosen protection was glass and, after some phoning around, the winning bid went to a company called Avenue Glass which resides on North Grand Avenue.

I was delighted when I called on the following Friday to hear that the glass was ready for pickup and asked what their hours are with a view to collect after work so we would have it for the weekend. They close at 5pm and operate on weekdays only so I called my father-in-law because he has a truck and he is available at that time. After work we crossed town and arrived at the location at 4.52 only to find that there was a man closing up shop. Motioning to get in he informed me that he was closing and he had shut down the registers. Without another word, and with a rather instinctive feeling that I'll take my business elsewhere, I turned and left.

Fast forward a week or so and we start getting the messages on our answering machine telling us that our glass is ready. Of course we're not there to take the call and we're not too interested in calling back as it seems they aren't interested enough in our business.

So....I reckon they decided it might be wise to try calling later when I'm at home because that's exactly what happened this evening. I took the call and it went something like this.....

HER: We've been trying to call you to let you know your glass is ready and if you don't get it we'll dispose of it.

ME: I called the Friday after the glass was cut and told you I would be there by 5 to pick it up. I made a special trip with my father-in-law in his truck and we arrived at 8 minutes before 5 and the guy was closing up and told me he'd taken all the money out of the regist....................(interrupted)

HER: "Sweetie, we close at 5"

ME: "Sweetie, we arrived at 8 minutes before 5 and..........(interrupted again)"

HER: Do you want to pick up the glass or shall we dispose of it?

So to cut a medium story a little shorter than medium length, I told her to shove it and I'm happy in the knowledge that I'll be taking my business to a company that cares about the service it provides.

Needless to say, I can heartily recommend Avenue Glass of Springfield.

1) In the current economy I would have thought Ave. Glass would be happy to have your business. It's amazing they just dispose of it without blinking an eye...strange! I hope the owner reads your blog.

2) Good for you! That sort of thing makes me crazy and is exactly why I am boycotting Shop n Save.

3) Did you order glass from Shop N Save??

4) No, as I recall it was over cashing a check. The triplets were babies and it had been awhile since I had been there. Long enough that I was out of their system. So after ringing up all of my groceries they wouldn't take my check. I can't even remember why. I had been cashing checks there for years. So I left everything there and that was six years ago. I think I even gave them a second chance and it happened again. So I just never went back. It was about the service and the way I was treated.

5) That's a good enough reason. If an experience or two leaves a bad memory there'll be a bad association.

6) With the economy being so bad and retailers having to suffer unless it is a necessity item instead of something that could be used but not required, I'm amazed as well. The day for a retailer to be touchy and negative with the customers is over or that retailer might be closing shop. I had a similar incident when I worked retail years (and years) ago but we were WAY past closing time and all the employees were gone and I was alone. There was NO WAY I was going back in the store to help someone who was close to 1 hour late. I had also shut down and had the deposit with me (another uncomfortable situation). If it isn't closing yet--you have every right to argue a quick pick-up of an item. It isn't like you were going to go in and browse. We probably pissed off that customer that day but I felt we were justified in saying "no". This guy was wrong and the woman even worse to badger you and interrupt you instead of listening and being sympathetic--even if she didn't agree. A nice gesture might have been to give you a 5%-10% discount. Mark up is usually 200% in retail--they could afford it...and keep a customer happy and coming back and recommending them to others.

7) We had a large pane of glass replaced in a window at our previous house because the people who made an offer made it with the contingency that we would get it replaced. Even though it was just a single pane cracked on the inside only. Even though it never leaked or anything. We used Avenue Glass, again on a recommendation. They seemed to do a fine job. Except a month or so ago, the new owner called our realtor wanting the name of the people who installed the new pane of glass because it was leaking.

Hah! Could have had the one with the small crack that didn't leak, but no.

8) Apparently their product isn't that good if a new window leaks worse than and old cracked one. LOL

9) George, I wish a lot more people would have the guts to stand up like you did. I know it's a small thing and that it will affect you a lot more than it will them, but it's about the principle of the matter. I should have done the same thing at Lowes a few years back when I needed some glass cut. Over 30 minutes later, I was still standing there watching an employee try to figure out how to push a button. It was sad.

10) When I got back the first time the missus and I said we were taking our business elsewhere, the missus vehemently expressed the opinion that we should try to get a discount. I vehemently expressed the opinion that I would rather pay someone else more if they gave two hoots about their customers.

I want good service and I'm happy to pay a little extra. I do not want cheap prices with crap service, that's just sad.

11) Right on. Cheap prices ARE why products and services are turning into crap. If one store is selling something for 10% less than another store, most people don't care why there's a difference. I'd rather spend money on something that will last a long time and have quality customer service if something goes wrong. That is almost impossible to find.

12) But is exactly why you're such a loyal customer of Dane's.

13) I too have had frustration with Avenue Glass. I needed two pieces of glass cut. I am a bargain shopper and always look for the best price. As far as I was concerned glass is glass. How could prices be so different?! Anyhow, the Avenue Glass bid came in about 30 dollars cheaper than their competition, so I went with them. I was quoted forty dollars. Three weeks later I receive a phone call stating they were complete (I actually thought they had lost my order). When I listen to my message the girl said my total was $58.00. I didn't worry about the difference. I figured I would settle up when I picked up the glass. When I went to pick up the total again changed to $65.00. I argued with them, but ended up leaving extremely frustrated. On top of everything, the girl was extremely rude! Avenue Glass will never have my business again!

14) Rudeness seems to be the order of the day for these people. Did you pay or leave without? I am satisfied that they made a loss out of their insolence.

16) Yes, that would have been excellent. Often one thinks of what one should have said after the occasion has passed.

17) I am glad when people post their stories like this. I believe that part of the price I pay for anything is paying for good service and that is what I expect to receive. I will be sure to keep Avenue Glass of of my list.

Sorry you had to go through it but good for you for not giving them your money. They do not deserve it.

18) That is exactly why I posted and I'm glad you saw that. I believe that word of mouth is the best advertiser and it should work both ways. My money is going to another company.

19) I think it is very ironic that she could call you AFTER hours but they couldn't accept your money DURING hours??? WOW, I agree with LGrant, the economy is in too much trouble for that practice.

20) Actually it was not after hours because I live less than 5 minutes drive from work I can get home well before 5.
