The Hound of the Baskervilles

So we'd just finished a lovely exquisite dinner of homemade burger and oven fries and we decided that we'd all take a lovely stroll around the neighbourhood. Going for a walk is one of Lucy's favourite things and about the only thing guaranteed to calm her, especially if we carry her in our arms. She especially loves to sit on my shoulders.

Anyway, we took the video camera so as to get some nice footage to keep and to send to my parents who've never met their little Grand-Daughter. Carrie was filming Lucy on my shoulders and I suggested that she walk on ahead a little and film us coming towards the camera. It was as she took position and started filming that it happened.....
This was a fraction of a second before.

Then the attack......

and this was the result.....

Of course I saw the dog approach but he didn't look aggressive. On the contrary, he looked like he was going to sniff her rear and when she screamed I thought it was just out of surprise.

We often walk by this house and the dog is really pretty and friendly looking but I think in this instance he saw us as a threat. His human was coming home and had activated the garage door through which the dog had run. This lady followed us home but we really weren't in the mood for dialogue so just went to the prompt care on Wabash which, mercifully, was having a quiet night. Funnily enough we were there around a week ago when Carrie was seen for a sinus infection.....same doctor too.

Not too much damage: Just a copayment, a little "irrigation" of the wounds, and a prescription. The financial parts of which will be billed to the neighbours' dog who will have to pull sleds in Alaska for a summer to pay.

4) Sorry to hear about your injury. I think this neighbor deserves to pay a lot more than expenses. Glad Lucy didn't end up in the fray too.

5) Animal control were out last night and I suppose if the dog wasn't up to date with his shots then we'd have heard about it by now.
There were lots of young children playing nearby so I'm glad that they haven't been bitten.
In the neighbours defence, that the dog managed to be loose was probably just a random event that wouldn't usually occur. He looks like such a friendly dog and we probably seemed threatening to him. The neighbour was more upset than us....we were laughing about it on the way to prompt care.

Thanks for the good wishes. Carrie is doing fine.

6) My argument still is the dog is more aggressive than he should be if he is going out of his yard to attack people or dogs. I used to work with guard dogs so I know a dog should guard a perimeter--not go 40 ft. from it. I can sympathize with the owner. A similar thing happened to me with my dog, Lucky. The postman was coming to the door and I opened the door to meet him and either forgot about Lucky or he just flew past me. It all happened so fast I don't recall the details but the poor guy had a 90+ dog roaring at him, guns blazing. Luckily (no pun intended) the guy stood still. I kept telling him not to move and went and got Lucky. Apologizing and embarassed and GRATEFUL that nothing happened. Lucky was a great dog and very sweet-tempered for the most part but he was protective and after years of being a yard dog back in MN, he had a grudge with trash guys, postmen and paper-guys. I'm not sure if it was the protective side or the grudge side that took over but it scared me good and I was very careful after that to make sure I knew where he was and that he never did it again. So, I see both sides--the neighbor will hopefully be more aware and careful in the future before one of the kids in the neighborhood is hurt. Kids are natural agitators and dogs get more frenzied with their noise and energetic activity. Glad it all turned out good and Carrie can walk away laughing.

8) I got bit on the thumb by our neighbor's poodle when I was a kid and that experience stayed with me until my early 20's. I was terrified of dogs. I have since overcome that fear and I hope this event doesnt traumatize your daughter.

How did you get the dog off of your daughter? Did he just bite and run or did you kick him?

11) The dog bit my wife. My daughter was on my shoulders blissfully unaware of everything. She is 5 months old. After the dog bit, it ran away, no kicking needed.

Carrie recently called me from work to tell me that it looks like the antibiotic isn't working so she'll go back to the doctor tomorrow.
