Afghan Surprise
Carrie's brother is in the SC National Guard and recently returned from a year in Afghanistan. A few months ago, during a phone conversation, he told us that he was sending a gift for Lucy and to expect a package. What he didn't tell us was that the package required the mailman to back his little cart into our driveway and for us both to lift the package out. We knew to expect something but we didn't expect it to be quite this large. So we got it out and spent the next half hour or so unpacking this surprise and oH mY gOoDnEsS!!!!
What a beauty!

The photo doesn't do it justice. He had it handcarved and it is incredibly intricate with inlays and a felt lining.
We decided to use it for childhood mementos: The day Lucy was born I procured a selection of newspapers and weekly news magazines. I put them in acid-free plastic and sealed them. There is also her first receiving blanket from the hospital and a few other bits and bobs. We will keep adding to it and not tell her that it is her chest until she is old enough to be responsible for owning it without damaging it. She's going to get a nice surprise one birthday and I can't wait to see the look on her face.

That is going to work well for a make-shift coffee table when Lucy gets to college. Looks pretty study and should hold plenty of people and/or beer bottles.
